Cash App's security feature broke Google Play.
My Cash App debit card stays locked until I need it. Google Play tried to charge the card. It declined. Google wouldn't retry. Cash App Pay wouldn't link. I eventually paid using a completely different payment flow.
Google Play tried to charge my Cash App debit card for a subscription renewal. The card is locked-by-default — a Cash App security feature I love — and only unlocks when I press a button in the app.
Card declines. Google emails me. I unlock the card. Google retries. Charge succeeds. Life continues.
Google declined the card and refused to retry, ever, on any schedule. Cash App Pay would not link as a separate Google Play payment method. My subscription entered a purgatory where the account was 'past due' but no charge would ever be attempted again.
- 01Unlocking the card and waiting.
- 02Removing and re-adding the card.
- 03Adding Cash App Pay as a payment method.
- 04Contacting Google support (twice).
- 05Contacting Cash App support (once, briefly).
I paid the outstanding balance manually through a completely different Google product's checkout, which somehow cleared the Play account status. Technically solved. Emotionally unresolved.
